From 7-9 June a 3-day course wil take place about advanced Pulsed Laser Deposition of complex oxides. Goal of the course is to obtain an understanding of the scientific and technoloical background of Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) controlled by high pressure RHEED, including hands-on-training. Participants will obtain an understanding of the fundamental and technological background of thin film growth and growth parameter optimisation in pulsed laser deposition controlled by high pressured RHEED. The course will take place in Enschede and is organised by Twente Solid State Technology (TSST) with the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology. The University of Twente, Saxion University of Applied Sciences and four high tech companies are combining forces to increase the production capacity for microfluidic systems. As part of this pilot line project (“proeftuin”), they are improving access for SMEs to their facilities, including the MESA+ NanoLab and High tech Factory. Moreover, four concrete demonstrators to suit a range of applications will be developed, including a micropipette and micro needle.

The University of Twente and Saxion are both equipped with a high-quality micro and nano technology infrastructure. For example, the MESA+ NanoLab has as focus on development, prototyping and small-scale production, to be used by various high tech companies. The facilities at High Tech Factory (HTF) on the UT campus are typically equipped for so-called back-end activities, such as testing wafers and testing/sorting chips.

Many innovative high tech companies are forced to scale up their production activities within a few years. They often require an environment that will allow them to have access to equipment and support staff and services (maintenance, management, etc.), to enable stable and cost-efficient production. A pilot line facility allows them to take the next step towards the industrial production of microfluidic chips or devices.

The six partners will be working together closely to help meet this demand and reinforce the existing infrastructure for the production of microfluidic devices. A smart scale-up facility will developed. This initiative meets the demand of 4 partners: Micronit Microtechnologies, U-Needle, SmartTip (currently located at High Tech Factory) and Bronkhorst High-Tech (which already uses the NanoLab). The coordination and development of production capacity will increase the possibilities for capacity sharing of production technology and processes. This allows companies to produce on a larger scale, realise client-specific demonstrators faster, and exchange knowledge.

The continued development of High Tech Factory is part of the project ‘proeftuin’ Microfluidic Systems. Moreover, the four above-mentioned companies are working together to develop application possibilities for innovative microfluidic technology. They are developing concrete demonstrators, which will serve to illustrate both the added value and the scalability of the technology.

The companies and applications involved are as follows:
- U-Needle: innovative micro needle for intradermal administration of insulin;
- Micronit Microtechnologies: a sharp micropipette to replace the current glass-based capillaries, intended for single cell handling, DNA research and IVF;
- SmartTip: a nano-pipette (Fluid FM probe) for applications such as 3D metal printing on micrometre scale and electroporation for the transportation of substances within cells;
- Bronkhorst High-Tech: a microfluidic sensor system for measuring the calorific value of natural gas, LNG, biogas and compounds thereof.

The Testing Ground for Microfluidic Systems is funded through a contribution from the OP Oost 2014-2020 subsidy programme. This programme is a joint effort by the Dutch provinces of Overijssel and Gelderland to use the means provided by the European Regional Development Fund or ERDF to stimulate innovation and low-carbon economy.

Recently, the University of Twente has made huge steps in reinforcing the high quality facilities. Investing in open-access infrastructure to the brightest minds in research and commercialization is crucial for our competitive position and contributes to the innovation goals of the Dutch topsectors HTSM and Chemical Industry.

 

The University of Twente has a lot to celebrate: anniversary of the Nanolab, the recent financial contribution from the Toekomstfonds of the ministry of Economic Affairs, and being awarded the iLab label for the High Tech Factory.

NanoLabNL heeft drie nieuwe vouchers voor het MESA+NanoLab Twente uitgereikt aan de bedrijven Avantes, Qmicro en Measurement Science Consultancy. De vouchers, ter waarde van €7.500,- per stuk, geven recht op 50 tot 75 uur zelfstandig gebruik van de NanoLabNL-faciliteiten (inclusief training) en/of advies daarover. De vouchers zijn uitgereikt tijdens een startbijeenkomst van MESA+ NanoLab Twente op woensdag 28 augustus. De uitreiking viel samen met de internationale conferentie COMS 2013. Tijdens deze conferentie stond de commercialisering van micro- en nanotechnologie centraal.

Met deze vouchers kunnen de bedrijven op een laagdrempelige manier kennis maken met de onderzoeksfaciliteiten van het MESA+Nanolab Twente. Avantes zet de voucher in om onderzoek te doen naar de montage van een instelbaar optisch filter voor een miniatuur spectrometer. Het microtechnologiebedrijf Qmicro gebruikt de voucher voor een onderzoek naar het verticaal aanbrengen van elektrische connecties door een silicium wafer met als doel een elektrische verbinding te realiseren tussen chips. Hierdoor kunnen de chips in hoogte worden gestapeld of worden gecombineerd. De derde winnaar, Measurement Science Consultancy gebruikt de NanoLabfaciliteit om de bruikbaarheid van een eigen TIG-las concept nader te toetsen en de optimale procesparameters hiervoor te vinden. Dit moet uiteindelijk leiden tot een las van hogere kwaliteit.

Tijdens een startbijeenkomst bij MESA+ NanoLab Twente zijn vandaag NanoLabNL-vouchers uitgereikt aan 5 innovatieve nanobedrijven. De vouchers, ter waarde van €7.500,- per stuk, geven recht op 50 tot 75 uur zelfstandig gebruik van de NanoLabNL-faciliteiten (incl. training) en/of advies daarover.

 

De bedrijven die een vouchers hebben ontvangen voor het MESA+Nanolab Twente zijn MyLife Technologies BV, Tide Microfluidics, Bronkhorst High-Tech BV, Demcon en AeroTech Development B.V..

 

Wegens succes van deze voucherronde heeft het Stichtingsbestuur van NanoLabNL beslotenin 2013 nogmaals twee voucherrondes uit te schrijven. Meer informatie over de tweede ronde is hier beschikbaar.
